Ipsy Glam Bag Review – October 2015

Hey everyone!  Welcome to another Glam Bag review!

This month’s theme is: Alter Ego.

The bag is dual sided.  The front is a metallic gold leather look and the opposing side a black patent look.  I really like the bag itself.

Below is a shot of my October bag:

For those of you that are new to the game:

Ipsy is a monthly subscription service.  Each month, subscribers will receive a beautiful Glam Bag with deluxe samples and full-sized beauty products. Members can watch and play along with the stylists with the same products that they are using. All for only $10 a month.

I have been a member for more than 2 years and I absolutely love it.  I have discovered so many excellent products through Ipsy!  I may not always love everything I receive but for only 10.00 a month it is such a fun surprise to look forward to each month!  Ipsy spotlights numerous brands each month and you will generally receive something from 5 of them!  In addition to the products received you will get discount codes from most brands…even the ones that you do not receive!  This months’ discounts include but are not limited to: Emite Makeup, Ayres, Dr. Brandt, Coastal Scents, IT cosmetics, Pixi…the discounts range between 10% -50% off purchase (averaging at 20-25%) and are occasionally a dolloar amount.  They sometimes include a gift with purchase.  Ipsy also now offers curated sets and other products throughout the month that can be purchased at a special price!  I LOVE THESE!  Another perk is the point system.  You can review your bag and items each month to save points for additional products! This month I used my Ipsy points to add the Chella blonde/taupe brow pencil to my bag.  I love Chella products and this is my all time favorite brow pencil.

*NEW* several months back Ipsy also added giveaways to their site!  Every month, you can win AMAZING hauls from their Glam Bag partners..and let me tell you there are SO many great ones this month…IT Cosmetics (a personal fave), LaVanilla, Avène, The Balm Cosmetics, Touch in soul, Laura Geller, Dr. Brandt and many more.  I can’t wait to play along on instagram and enter all of them.!

So go ahead, take the beauty quiz, get your first Glam Bag, watch the videos, and create your own!

The Goods:

Emite Makeuo

Emité Makeup Professional Slant Tweezers: (I’m not sure on the value of these tweezers as the site appears to be Swedish)

These are your standard in appearance slant tweezers.  I already have tweezers that I use so I wasn’t excited about this product;  however,  I gave them a shot and I do like them better than the set I was using.  They are very sharp and make getting those teeny tiny hard to tweeze hairs easier.  I will use them often after all and now I have a spare.

Ayres

Ayres Pampas Sunrise Hand Cream:  This is a deluxe sample 0.7oz. Full size product is $12.50

This is described as an Ultra rich hand cream enriched with shea butter, plant emollients and herbal extracts to moisturize dry skin.  While the formula of this hand cream isn’t bad the scent is.  It sounds nice described as: Lemongrass, mandarin, bergamot, patchouli and spearmint with an exotic background of cedar wood for a musky scent, yet it actually smells a lot like the inside of grandma’s medicine cabinet.  Not a fan.

Aurora Gel

Aurora Gel Effect Nail Polish in Inky Dinky:  This product is full size and is $8.99

This polish is meant to give a gel polish look sans UV curing and the painstaking removal process of an actual gel manicure.  First off this polish is meant to be used as a 3 step process with the brands own base coat and top coat.  It bugs me to receive something that is part of an incomplete process.  The polish itself, on its own, is a good formula and the brush is really nice.  It looks quite shiny at first but dulls as it dries. (unlike a gel) It has lasted without chipping for longer than most of my polishes without the use of a base or top coat.  Verdict is: as a regular polish it’s a good polish but on its own it is nothing like a gel polish.  The additional two products would be needed to determine if you can achieve a gel-like manicure using the polish.

Nourish Organics

Nourish Organic Argan Face Serum: This is a deluxe size sample.  Full size product is 0.7 oz and $23.99

This fragrance free, gluten free, vegan serum is designed to deeply hydrate and replenish while softening skin and helping to retain clarity. Rosehip oil smoothes skin’s texture and helps even out its tone. I’ve received this product several times now so I wasn’t thrilled to see it again.  It’s a nice product but I have a couple serums that I already use that are more targeted to my concerns and needs and I do not like to layer too many products that might clog my pores and aggravate my skin.  If you are seeking vegan, natural, organic products that hydrate and smooth your skin and enjoy Argan and other oils for skin care than this might be a good fit for you.

The Balm Meet Matt

The Balm Cosmetics Meet Matt(e) Hughes Long Lasting liquid lipstick:  This is a deluxe size sample.  Full size product is $17.00

This was my favorite product in this months glam bag.  I wish it would have been full sized!  I received this in the shade: Committed, a pinky nude that is perfect for me.  It has a vanilla mint scent which I thought smelled a lot like mint chip ice cream. (yum)  The formula is nice: rich, pigmented, smooth and not too drying of a matte.  I really like this product and will likely take advantage of the Ipsy/brand discount and repurchase.

Ipsy Bonus Point Item:

Chella Brow Pencil

Chella Eyebrow Pencil in Tantalizing Taupe: Product is full size and is $18.00

I purchased this brow pencil by redeeming ipsy points.  I jumped on it as soon as I saw it as an option.  I love this brow pencil and this brand.  I can’t tell you how many of their ivory lace highlighters and brow pencils that I have gone through and I’d likely never have discovered this brand if not for Ipsy.  This brow pencil comes in a pretty wide range of shades as far as brow choices go (6 shades) and I like both the beautiful blonde and the tantalizing taupe.  These brow pencils are the ultra slim, mechanical design and the perfect formula: not too hard but not too soft; blendable but not smudgy.  If you have never checked this brand out I highly recommend their brow pencils and highlighter pencils, I use the ivory lace highlighter pencil for SO many things, it is so versatile ie: bridge of my nose, under brows, corner of eyes, upper cheekbones and to conceal small blemishes. Fabulous products!

  2. Ok, Keep It Real

Awesome post — I just wrote about my bag today, but overall this month’s didn’t excite me too much. My favorite item out of the bunch was probably either the liquid lipstick or hand cream… Haven’t tried the nail polish yet but that’s super lame it’s meant to be part of a 3 step process…

Thank you. I’ll check yours out now! Same here. :/ I think the polish will probably be a really good one if you invest in the base and top coat…I did like the lip color. I got the yellow hand cream and while it was a good formula I just could not stand the smell at all. I even re-tried it several times to see if I was just crazy hahaha but I still thought: medicine cabinet! Ahh well..you win some..you lose some!! Turns out, I love my new tweezers. 😉

Great review love!! You got some great items! I love that liquid lipstick and totally wanted it haha! I have the eyebrow pencil and I love it! I have almost used it up! I never use up like any makeup product, so that is saying a lot for me haha!

Thank you! The matte lip is great. I know I never use anything up either. I always have a million open at a time so eyeliners and mascaras have to be tossed before they are used up. basically the only thing I ever use up time and time again, even with multiples around my house are my brow pencils and the ivory lace highlighter!

I haven’t received mine yet but I hope I get the balm lipstick! Also the chella brow pencil is my favorite too I think it was sold out when I could redeem it! Boo! Also I’m 100% with you on the frustration with the nail polish. Why give us a color that the website says “MUST use topcoat”…well then send us the top coat in the next bag!

    Thanks for sharing your bag!

Right!? Pretty lame move, Ipsy! haha. I think you get 1 of two ‘The Balm’ products one of them being the lippy the other a luminizer/highlighter. I’ve heard good things about the ‘mary lou(manizer)’ as well but the sample is the size of a tiny eyeshadow :/ -I just love Chella! There are other similar pencils that are good but Chella has the best colours, I think! Thanks for reading and commenting!!

Better to get the lipbalm, but I have to say I LOVE my mary lou manizer! It’s a holy grail of mine and I go back and forth between highlighters but ALWAYS go back to that one. It’s 1000% worth it & if you get it on hautelook it’s cheaper 🙂
I have an old post with swatches of the highlighter somewhere on my blog!

I’ll check it out..it may have been your post where I read about it b/c I also remember a Hautelook mention! I haven’t purchased anything from there in some time. I like it but shipping often takes a really long time and most things sell out so quickly! Regardless; I’ll have to try the Mary Lou….I really liked the ‘TheBalm’ bronzer I tried!

Well yeah they do,sell out fast. I think there is a way to “like” the brand so it will tell you when its back up. But usually the balm is every 3-5 weeks on there. Also sometimes im in a hurry. Others if its a good deal i dont mind waiting 2 to 3 weeks. Its like christmas when i get a new present 😉
